Bideford Vets entertained Torrington Vets in the annual Dave Hickman
Memorial game and won an excellent contest 50-19. Many players were
putting on boots long since discarded and a Torrington stalwart made his
rugby debut aged 50+ it was that sort of afternoon! Despite trailing at
half time by an imposing 33 unanswered points the visitors enjoyed a
spirited second half and ran in 3 tries to change the complexion of the
match before the hosts ran in a champagne try from deep in their own
half before adding a couple more to end up in the driving seat.
The game was a good mix of festive friendship and aggressive rivalry before
retiring to the bar! A good afternoon remembering a good friend.
Bideford try scorers were Mike Powe, man of the match with 2, Harry
Waters, Glyn Brown, Tim Cramp, Ben Shugar, Steve Fisher and Dave Slee
who added 5 conversions. Torrington try scorers were Richard Mann with 2
and Stuart Ellis. Adrian Avery slotted 2 conversions.
