Two teams took to the field on Boxing Day with one goal in mind: to raise vital funds and awareness for two incredible local charities, the Children’s Hospice South West and the North Devon Hospice. The result? A day full of excitement, heart, and, of course, great rugby.
The event had a strong promotion behind it, with endorsements from World Cup winners and local celebrities creating a buzz both nationally and within the community. While the day started off quietly, it didn’t take long for the crowds to gather as the teams warmed up. By the time the match kicked off, the atmosphere was electric.
The Bideford team was primarily made up of Quins players, with a few students and returning first-team members who were either coming back from injuries or looking to gain some valuable match time. On the other side, the Hospice team boasted a star-studded lineup, including former captains, nearly 14 ex-Chiefs captains, county players, and former professional players.
The North Devon Hospice team came out on fire in the first half, playing with confidence and flair as they attacked from everywhere. But it was Mills, the veteran flanker, who stole the show with his blistering pace. He sprinted down the wing, leaving the Bideford defender in his wake and scored under the posts, a clear reminder that speed is timeless, no matter the age.
Bideford’s defense struggled in the first half, as the Nash brothers started to dominate the midfield. Noah Nash, Matt Coles, and Mike Smith, found gaps and all crossed the try line. Bideford only had a solitary penalty to show for their efforts at the break.
The second half saw some changes, with Bideford bringing in players with Chiefs experience. This helped to steady the ship somewhat. Charlie Stevenson injected much-needed pace, while Mark Schofield’s leadership helped to calm things down. Both Stevenson and Short added tries to Bideford’s tally, with Reece Pearn converting both. The Hospice team were boosted with scores from Harvey Brown and Matt Coles both will say they ran them in from the 22 meter line but we all know the truth!
In the end, it was a highly entertaining game, and the crowd that turned out to support the cause had a fantastic time. The event featured some incredible donations, auction prizes, and a massive raffle, making the day a huge success.
We are incredibly grateful for the volunteers who helped make this event possible and for the support of everyone who attended. It’s always an honor to work alongside such great charities, and we look forward to continuing our efforts in the New Year.
Now, with tough away trips to OPM and Topsham in January, the team will be ready for another challenge, but for now, we celebrate a day well spent.
