This weekend sees Dartmouth travelling to face the Chiefs, and it’s shaping up to be a strong day of rugby. The Chiefs will be without prolific try-scorer Charlie Stevenson, and Ben Short is also likely to miss out through injury. Ethan Paddon and Arthur Souch will be unavailable due to family commitments and holidays, while Sam Bola continues his Devon duties, heading to Buckinghamshire for his second appearance in the county shirt. On the positive side, David Evans-Pearce and Liam Balsdon are both expected to be fit again.
Although Dartmouth have struggled this season, that means very little on the day. They remain a robust, combative side, and given our own experiences last year, we know exactly how dangerous a team in that position can be. They will be shown full respect, and we’ll be selecting the strongest squad available. With no Quins fixture this weekend, training will be competitive and intense, though our physio may have another busy week after last Saturday’s battle at Devonport.
A special mention goes to Bradley Goman, who is generously sponsoring match day. We’re sure he’ll be reaching into his pocket for a few jugs afterwards!
The Colts are also at home, taking on Barnstaple in what promises to be a fierce contest. They performed superbly against league leaders Crediton last week and will be buzzing for this derby. Barnstaple are right up there in quality, and with the weather likely to play a part, it could be a tight, physical affair. Colts players continue to push for senior selection, with the coaching team keeping a close eye on Rhodes, Hutchings, Haste and Beal as they develop.
On Sunday, the Ladies travel Devonport Services kick off at 2.30pm. They were unlucky to bow out of the cup last weekend but will be determined to keep their 100% league record intact. The previous meeting was a bruising encounter, so this should be another excellent match.
The Under-16s face Exmouth at 11am. The last time the sides met—two years ago—Exmouth edged a one-point win, and they’ve since put pressure on the likes of Newton Abbot and Exeter Athletic. It has all the makings of a cracking contest. The 16s should be close to full strength, depending on school fixtures, and could see the return of Ollie Garnett and Henry Skelding from injury.
Other fixtures this Sunday include U7, U9 and U11 hosting Barnstaple at 11am, U13s hosting Barnstaple at 10.30am, U15s welcoming Ilfracombe at midday, U12 Girls (cluster) at 2pm (TBC), and U16 Girls against Exeter Saracens at 2.30pm. U7s will play on their usual pitch; U9, U11 and U12G on the Park pitch; U13, U15 and U16G at Kingsley; and U16 on the Main pitch. Teams at Kingsley are asked to warm up on the 3G where possible to keep players and boots clean.
Away fixtures include U8, U10, U12 and U14 at Barnstaple at 10.30am, and U14 Girls travelling to Exeter Athletic for a 2pm kick-off.
