The weekends don’t get any easier for Bideford Chiefs, as they prepare to welcome Topsham, who arrive on the back of a defeat to Exmouth. The Chiefs, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their recent win away at Withy as they prepare for their first home game of the season.
Topsham’s links with Exeter University, alongside a number of new signings in their first team, mean they are sure to provide a stern test. Their recent defeat to Exmouth also highlights the challenge facing the Chiefs, with clubs often able to draw on additional strength and depth through first-team signings and player availability. With RFU regulations allowing considerable flexibility around second-team selection, this can make for a difficult and unpredictable fixture. That said, it promises to be a cracker, and the Chiefs will be keen to make the most of their first home outing.
The Chiefs continue to contend with injuries and player unavailability this week, meaning there could be some new faces in the squad. For those coming into the side, this presents a real opportunity to stake their claim and make a position their own. Sam Bola will miss out following a concussion sustained while training with Albion, but there are plenty of players ready and waiting to step up.
The Quins face another challenging fixture as they travel to Cullompton to take on Cully’s second team. After a tough opening against a lively Exeter Engineers side, the Quins will be looking to get back on track. Cully will be a difficult prospect on home soil, having won one and lost two of their three fixtures so far.
Availability remains a concern, with a number of players missing this weekend. The Quins have been rallying around to bring players back into contention, and there will be some new faces in the squad. Following last week’s charity game, however, a few players are still working their way back to full fitness, leaving selection a challenge.
Unfortunately, there will be no fixture for the Colts this weekend, as Totnes are unable to field a side. It is a disappointing outcome for the group, particularly after Topsham had already been moved out of their league schedule, leaving them without a game.
In true Bideford spirit, though, the lads are finding a way to get involved. Four Colts players will be dual-registered to help Torrington Colts with their upcoming fixture. In addition, some of our talented Colts will pull on a senior shirt this weekend, earning their opportunity through their continued commitment, ability and hard work on the training pitch.
It may be another challenging weekend across the club, but with players stepping up, new faces coming into the squads and opportunities opening up for the next generation, there is plenty to look forward to. Good luck to all the teams representing the club this weekend!
