The festive break is over and rugby action returns this weekend. Many of the Chiefs were given time off over the Christmas period following the charity match, meaning a strong and healthy squad is available for selection. Ruben Stacey and Jack Balsdon both impressed recently and, with prolific winger Charlie Stevenson away on holiday, there’s a real opportunity for them to push for a place on the wing.
This weekend sees Bideford Chiefs kick off round two of their league campaign away to OPMs in Plymouth. OPMs proved to be a tough test in the opening round, but the Chiefs came away with a hard-fought win. Lessons were learned, and Bideford will need to be at their best once again on the road. Selection has been extremely competitive, with the welcome return of players such as Ben Short and Sam Bola.
OPMs are a gritty, physical side with some outstanding backs and are always a challenge at home, especially after a long journey. They’ve shown their quality this season, including an impressive 42–26 home win over Exeter Saracens, although they most recently fell away at Topsham. What’s guaranteed is a committed home performance, and the Biddy lads will be keen to start fast and get on the front foot early.
Quins’ fixture has been postponed following the sad passing of a player’s mother. Our condolences go to the player, their family, and the club. There is hope Quins may arrange a friendly, and we’ll share updates via social media if confirmed.
The Colts are at home to Kingsbridge, and they’d greatly appreciate vocal support from the local crowd. With several Colts already making senior debuts, the coaching team is keen to continue developing the next generation of players.
On Sunday, the Ladies and Juniors return to action. The Ladies face a tough home fixture against Cullompton, while the Junior Girls travel to Newton Abbot for another challenging encounter.
Best of luck to all our teams this weekend.
